You Never Know Who's Out There

I know how frustrating it can be at times if you write something, create something artistic or do something that you hope will be a benefit to others...yet you have no idea if it is. You get no comments on your message board posts, no feedback on your blog, or no e-mails from those you hope might have noticed. 

You find yourself thinking: Isn't anybody out there watching or listening??

I've experienced two dilemmas like this: one is the above scenario. The second is that I have been getting quite a few listeners to my podcast. One episode has taken off like a rocket. But I have absolutely no idea why or where people are hearing about it...because no one has told me!

I have learned this: people do notice. You can indeed have an effect on someone and not realize it. But for varying reasons unknown to us, many people tend to be silent.

Sometimes, the deafening silence can make you think twice about continuing what you are doing if you don't know if it's doing any good. Here's my experience, though: so often, when I get to feeling this way, I do hear from someone I didn't know was out there. I recently found one reply to a post I made. The gist of it was "you don't know me, but I've been reading your website for a long time...your positive attitude in helping others was a catalyst and challenge to me in sharing my work." 

Those few words made 18 years of supporting musicians in the Twin Cities and beyond worth it all.

If you are the silent type, don't be shy. Let someone know how much you've been blessed. Creators, keep creating. Somebody, somewhere is watching or listening.
