Do It Now! Don't Wait!

When you see someone who does something really well, or has a special talent, you often think, I've just got to say something. But sometimes, for whatever reasons, you put it off or you just plain don't get around to it. Oh well, perhaps you think, there's plenty of time. 

As someone who has seen the loss of two people who were part of my life in the past 12 months---one expected, the other totally unexpected--I would argue for not putting it off. 

Next month will be one year ago that my dad passed away. I am very grateful for the time I had to prepare for this, and even more grateful for the fact that there was no unfinished business between us. When the time came when he could no longer verbally communicate with me, there were no need for words, because we knew where we were at with each other.

The other loss was someone who became a friend to me who died suddenly and tragically of a heart attack in his 40s. None of us who knew him or appreciated his art were prepared for this one. I was very glad that he knew I was among his fans...and I was grateful for all the support he expressed to me for my support work with musicians.

I don't mean to be fatalistic. It's just that I learned how important it is to not take things or people for granted. Before that musician hangs up the guitar or quits the road, or as people fade in and out of your life, make sure they know how much what they bring to your world matters to you.

Do it now. Don't wait.
