They See...When You Don't Think They're Looking

A couple of newsletters ago I talked about the frustration of making the effort of trying to reach people but never knowing if anyone's out there. I also briefly touched on the flip side, which is discovering that sometimes people you don't know about are out there noticing you while you're going about the business of being you. So, I want to explore a little more of that other side this time out.

I had one of my many farewell to Minnesota lunches recently with several past and present co-workers. They were quite supportive of my plans and what I've accomplished--in particular, someone who worked in one of the general areas I was in a few years ago. I had only a little bit of direct work contact with this person, but we became friendly and she took an interest in what I did. We were talking about what I would do when I got to Nashville, and she expressed a supreme confidence that I would be successful. She told me I was a positive and focused person who had what it took to succeed. I must say I was quite surprised by her assessment, mostly because I didn't think I had been around her all that much for her to have the opportunity to observe certain things. But, I guess she saw them  somehow.

My point here is you can just be who you are, spread your gifts in ways that are natural to you and people will be able to see your light shine. You don't have to try too hard or keep up with the next person.  And, if you do see people's strengths and talents, let them know when you do. Don't wait until they've left town or left a job...or they perhaps may never realize what it is they have that's special, or feel they are worth celebrating.  

Be an encourager...and be encouraged!
