If The Shoe Fits...

From the early days of my ponderings, here is a flashback I wrote around 1993:

I don't really ask for a lot out of life materially. But one thing I tend to hope for is shoes besides sneakers that would fit me. I'm a short person who's been dealt with wide feet in a M width world. I thought I'd found a place with some wide width shoes. I have had some luck there in the past...but lately it's been letting me down, too. Thus, I've resorted to a last resort...shelling out mucho bucks at the famous Nordstrom's for a pair of dress shoes with the hard to find WW width. So, I guess it's come to this. I must say, though, it was a whole different experience putting on these shoes and not thinking "well, they're a tiny bit snug in the front, but I might get by if they stretch." The salesperson even gave me some pads to put inside the shoes if I need them, in case the shoes stretched too much! Imagine that!

They say "if the shoe fits, wear it". Regardless of what I paid, I took that advice in this instance. There are some situations in life, though, where you should not try to stretch your foot to fit the shoe. That's when you're trying to be something that you aren't to gain the approval of someone else. Or, we tend to beat ourselves up and think less of ourselves because our abilities may not meet some else's appreciation or needs.

That's when you need to go shopping. If someone doesn't ask for your help, or appreciate your talents, find those who will. And once you find them, don't take them for granted. Those "old shoes" can get mighty comfortable...don't throw them out because they start getting a little worn.

There's a shoe for you out there. You just gotta shop around.
