No Overnight Success

I've been working with a couple of people in my coaching focus tracks the past few months. Without revealing any details or violating confidences, I must tell you that it has been an absolute exciting joy to see these folks move from places of uncertainty to actually taking the steps and going through the motions to do what they hope to achieve.

This past Labor Day weekend, I had the greatest thrill to watch two musician friends whose music I followed and encouraged for the past 15 years or so make it on to the stage of a nationally broadcast radio show. I've witnessed their musical journey over the years. I know what their beginnings were and all the work and the time it took to get them to where they are at this point.

The point of these examples are, it didn't happen overnight.  It's very hard to be patient and wait for breakthroughs. I freely admit patience is not one of my virtues. But the baby steps are part of the journey, and a very important part of the process. What if you ascended from the bottom step to the top, skipping all the steps in between, and found that when you got to the top, you weren't as prepared or ready as you thought and realized there was much more that needed to be learned? Scary, huh?

Chances are, you can probably look back at some disappointments in your life which were big deals at the time. In retrospect, you are most likely now grateful you didn't get what you want at that point because you needed some critical steps in between, or that path to be taken was not yet the right one.

Better to get it ready and right than get it quick and unprepared.
