Just Being You Recently I was at a songwriter gathering that I attend regularly. It's a great thing to see and hear songwriters of various success levels and abilities in action here in Nashville. They are a group that have a common goal in mind--getting songs published and making a living with their work--yet there is very little sense of competitiveness. They support one another's work, being complimentary and constructive in their feedback, and they often co-write songs with one another. At this one gathering, while a few were taking turns sharing their songs, this one fellow walked into the room. He listened attentively to everyone and offered positive feedback to their songs. It was evident that this person knew something about the art of songwriting. Then, someone finally introduced him to the rest of us...this person's name may not have been as familiar to a lot of people (except for me, always having been a close follower of the artists and the writers in music) but they may have certainly recognized a song or two he wrote as major hits on the pop charts. We got him to share some of those songs with us. He seemed genuinely humbled by the reaction he got. He also reacted the same way when a couple of us showed up at a gig he played in town a couple of days later. Just as in that small intimate gathering, among a larger crowd at this show we were blessed not only by his talent, but more importantly his spirit and how brightly his light shined on us. It's not about how successful you are in terms of recognition. It's about the impact you make on someone. How you've made a person feel special about who they are or what they did. May your light shine brightly on someone this holiday season.
